Rural Occupational Therapy

Blossom Rural provides accessible Occupational Therapy for rural families.

Blossom Rural provides rural families with accessible Occupational Therapy services that aren’t limited by location.

An Occupational Therapist (OT) supports children to develop the everyday skills they need to participate confidently at home, school, and in their community. Blossom Rural OT’s work with paediatric clients across Australia via teletherapy, making allied health services more accessible for rural and remote families.

What therapy looks like

Our Approach

At Blossom Rural, we understand that therapy doesn't just happen in a session, it happens in the everyday moments at home, at school, and in the community. That's why our OTs and Speechies work closely with families to build confidence and capacity that lasts beyond our therapy sessions.

Family Coaching

Our OTs utilise a family coaching approach for many of our goal areas. This means that parents and caregivers are active participants in the therapy process and in some cases, sessions may not require your child to be present at all.

At Blossom Rural, we believe that parents are the experts in their child. Our team works to use your knowledge to develop strategies and support that are practical, meaningful, and easy to carry into daily life. Because you're the one spending the most time with your child, building your confidence to support them between sessions and beyond the conclusion of therapy is just as important to us as the sessions themselves!

Direct Approach

Our OTs also utilise a direct, one-on-one therapy approach for many goal areas. One of the advantages of working with Blossom Rural is that our OTs are able to see your child in their natural environments, whether that's at home, at school, or in the community. Your therapy may recommend direct therapy for goals such as handwriting, fine motor development, and executive functioning - goals where hands-on, targeted support can make a real difference. If your therapist sees your child outside of the home environment where you are present, your therapist will remain in contact with you, booking in regular times to catch up and review progress, to ensure your child’s skills are making a meaningful difference outside of the therapy sessions.

Initial Consultation

A clinician will hold an Initial Consultation with the child's parent/caregiver. This will provide us the opportunity to discuss your concerns in depth and ensure we are taking the most appropriate pathway for your child.

During this session, an Initial Planning Document will be created for your child, to provide you an overview of the discussion held and some information regarding the assessments planned.

Assessment

If required, your clinician will begin the relevant assessments with your child. If you require a detailed Assessment Report, this can be written on completion of assessment. Assessment Reports include the findings of the assessment, goals for intervention and recommendations for your child's school and home.

Therapy begins!

Therapy is great fun! We use evidence-based intervention approaches to work on achieving your child’s individualised goals, determined from their assessment.

Our clinicians also use a parent coaching approach, to work alongside families and provide evidence-based strategies to implement in the household.
