Handwriting

An Occupational Therapist (OT) can help your child develop the underlying skills they need to express their ideas in writing, with ease and confidence.

Handwriting is a fundamental skill that underpins learning, creativity, and self-expression across every area of the school day. Pencil skills are more than just forming letters. They support a child’s ability to learn, play, and communicate their ideas in writing.

Why handwriting can be hard

There are many skills involved in handwriting neatly and efficiently. A child may struggle with one aspect or many, and the reasons behind their difficulties are often unique to them. Without understanding why a child is struggling, it can be hard to know where to start. Our OT team can assess which particular aspects of handwriting your child is finding difficult, and then work with your child, family and your school team to build those specific skills in a way that’s meaningful and motivating for them.

How Blossom Rural can help

Our Occupational Therapists take a thorough, individualised approach to handwriting support. Rather than a one-size-fits-all program, we look at the whole picture including the child’s strengths, challenges, and the environments where they need to write.

We can assess and address the many components of handwriting, including:

  • Letter formation and reversals – supporting your child to form letters correctly and consistently, and addressing common reversals (such as b/d or p/q).
  • Visual perceptual and visual motor integration skills – the foundational visual skills that allow a child to interpret, copy, and reproduce what they see on the page.
  • Legibility, letter sizing, and line placement – helping your child write in a way that is clear and readable, with appropriate sizing and accurate placement on lines.
  • Generating and organising ideas – supporting children who find it hard to get their thoughts out of their head and onto the page, not just in how they write, but in what they write.
  • Handwriting speed – building fluency so that writing becomes less effortful, allowing your child to keep up in the classroom.
  • Pencil grasp and control – addressing how your child holds and manages their pencil, which affects comfort, endurance, and the quality of their writing over time.
