Social and emotional skills

An Occupational Therapist (OT) can help your child develop the emotional and social skills they need to build and sustain healthy relationships — and can work alongside parents and carers to make sure that support extends beyond the therapy room and into everyday life.

Experiencing a range of emotions is a normal and healthy part of childhood — but learning how to understand, express, and manage those emotions is one of the most important skills a child will ever develop. Alongside this, the ability to connect with others, navigate friendships, and handle the inevitable ups and downs of social life lays the foundation for wellbeing throughout childhood and beyond.

When children struggle with emotional regulation or social skills, it can affect nearly every area of their life. They may find it hard to cope when things don’t go their way, struggle to read social cues, have difficulty making or keeping friends, or experience frequent emotional outbursts that are distressing for them and those around them. For many families, these challenges are among the most exhausting and worrying to navigate.

We can support your child with:

  • Understanding and identifying feelings in themselves and others: developing the emotional vocabulary and awareness to recognise what they and those around them are feeling
  • Understanding what causes their feelings: building insight into their own emotional triggers and responses, so that feelings become less overwhelming and more manageable
  • Learning tools to work through difficult feelings: developing a personal toolkit of strategies for self-regulation, so your child has something to reach for when emotions feel big
  • Joining in with play and handling rejection: practising the social skills needed to initiate play, read social situations, and cope with the disappointment of exclusion in a healthy and resilient way

How Blossom Rural can help

Our Occupational Therapists take a warm, child-centred approach to social and emotional development. We work directly with your child to build key skills, and we also work with you as a parent or carer because the strategies that happen at home, at school, and in the community are often where the most meaningful progress is made.
