Literacy
A Speech Pathologist can assist with reading, writing and spelling skills vital for literacy development.
Prior to reading and writing, children must develop phonological awareness.
Phonological awareness skills include:
Awareness of syllables in words: Wom | bat or Bu | tter | fly
Awareness of Onset and Rime: For a child to identify the initial sounds in words, e.g. Dog starts with ‘d’
Blending sounds to make a word: C + a + t = cat
Segmenting words into their sounds: Sheep = sh + ee + p
So how can Blossom Rural support your child in these areas?
At Blossom Rural Speech Pathology, we use synthetic-phonics programs to assist children with the development of reading and spelling skills. The evidence-based programs which we utilise to teach phonics include the Sounds-Write Program and the Read3 Program.
Our Speech Pathologist has completed the Sounds-Write practitioners training. The Sounds-Write program targets the conceptual and code knowledge children require to read and spell successfully.
We have also completed professional development training with the Read3 team. The Read3 program targets processing difficulties, including poor rapid automatic naming (RAN), phonological working memory (PM) and reading fluency.
